2021 Resident Match Timeline is confirmed

AFMC has finalized the 2021 R-1 Match Timeline. Match Day will be April 20, 2021.

AFMC would like to thank the AFMC Resident Matching Committee (ARMC) which has worked tirelessly on the compressed timeline and engaged with the medical education community to reach consensus. ARMC membership includes representation from the Faculty of Medicine Deans, Postgraduate Deans, Undergraduate Deans, Student Affairs Deans, the Canadian Federation of Medical Students, the Fédération des médecins residents du Québec, the Fédération médicale étudiante du Québec, Resident Doctors of Canada and the Canadian Resident Matching Service.

Guiding our faculties and students through the 2021 R-1 Match

Earlier this year, the AFMC Resident Matching Committee (ARMC) struck three sub-committees to support Canadian residency programs, students and the 17 Faculties of Medicine as a whole through the 2021 R-1 match process. Particular challenges to address include the transition to virtual interviews and the need for a compressed timeline in response to students having missed several weeks of clerkship and not having access to visiting electives.

The Virtual Interview and Program Promotion Subcommittee has developed a bilingual Canadian Residency Virtual Promotion Guide for applicants and residency programs which will be released in the coming weeks.

The 2021 R-1 Match Timeline was developed by the Technical Subcommittee and approved by the AFMC Board in July which is the result of collaboration between undergraduate and postgraduate offices and the match service, CaRMS. The timelines for the 2022 R-1 match are currently being developed and will be presented to the AFMC Board for approval in October.

The Subcommittee on Application and File Review has confirmed the template for the pan-Canadian Medical Student Performance Record, made several recommendations for process improvement and developed a structured Reference Letter. AFMC will continue to work to support learners and residency programs through match processes.
